Band: Souled Out
From: Montreal, Québec
Their formation story:
(Cody, vocals): "The band originally started with a different lineup and had played a couple of gigs with different vocalists in 2023-24 before they landed on me. I’ve known Josh (guitar) for a long time, we grew up in the same neighborhood and have played on the same shows in our other projects over the years so when he hit me up to do vocals for Souled Out I couldn’t pass it up as I was really into the sound and vibe of the music.
"I wrote lyrics for two songs before our first jam and when we met up it all clicked right away and we hopped in the studio soon after to record the EP."
Their sound in their own words:
"I think what’s so fun about our bands sound is that despite falling under the hardcore umbrella, we mix it up with anything from funk to hip-hop. While we draw inspiration from bands like (early) Turnstile, Slope, and Angel Du$t, we aren’t shy to throw in weird riffs heavy on the wah-pedal, punk bass grooves, funk-driven drums and Beastie Boys-type vocals. Every member adds their own flavour to the band and I find it shows in our recent release."
Latest release info:
"Summer Jazz is our first official release. It was recorded and mixed by our friend Grayson Carpenter from another great Montreal band called Bruiserweight. It was all done DIY in his jamspace and we sent it off to Dead Air Studios in the US to get mastered. The title 'Summer Jazz' was something Josh and I came up with. We knew we wanted to give it a silly name to capture the vibe of the EP but we waited until it came around naturally and one day we were texting and it just sort’ve happened.
"The lyrical content is a bit heavy at points, touching on anything from frustration with the current state of politics in the western world to writing about how empty my fridge is because I’ve invested so much time and money into niche music. I truly think that this is some of the most fun music I’ve ever played and the reception has been incredible so far, people really seem to fuck with it."
Future plans:
"We have our first show coming up soon with this lineup. As far as future plans go, we definitely want to play more gigs not only in Montreal but the east coast in general. Other cities in Quebec, around Ontario and the maritimes. We’ll be performing more and more as time goes by. Right now, we’re very focused on this first show, excited to see how people react to it live since we’ve been building up to this since the winter."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Casino from Montreal, Sold Short from Hamilton, Dulse from Halifax, and Scumlord from New Brunswick."
